USA Bobsled Gold !

But the vaunted USA-1 “Night Train” crew of Steven Holcomb, Steve Mesler, Justin Olsen and brakeman Curt Tomasevicz were so good, so dominant, so completely in control of the men’s four-man bobsled race, that seemingly from the first run (when USA-1 set a track record on the notoriously fast Whistler track), the much-awaited competition turned into a coronation. They said they were the best and actually made it look easy.

American Christians and Moral Relativism

Comments Off

If there is no Truth and only opinion, then there are no answers to be found. But then why ask questions? It is like setting out with ship and sail in search of treasure while convinced that no treasure exists.

Let us be blunt: It is simply not possible to espouse relativism — which holds that right and wrong are opinion — and be a true Christian.

Obama and Charity

Comments Off

Though Obama is fond of quoting scripture about “the least of these” to justify his policy on entitlements, he’s missing a vital part of the equation. Christ’s desire to help those in material need never exceeds his desire to help those who are afflicted spiritually. When Christ speaks of helping the poor, he places primary emphasis not on the poor, but on the prospective giver.

Hence, Jesus says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” The words reflect his deep knowledge of the need to love and be loved through free-will giving. Christ’s perspective on giving also points to other reasons why entitlements and Christian charity are incompatible — reasons that are rarely if ever considered by either side of the debate.

When rhetoric rules the roost

Comments Off

President Barack Obama and his senior advisers have demonstrated repeatedly that they are interested in weakening – not strengthening – the US alliance with Israel. This week the administration condemned Israel for defining the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron and Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem as national heritage sites. The fact that they are national heritage sites is so obvious that even President Shimon Peres defended the move.

Moreover, Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, reiterated for the millionth time this week that he opposes military strikes against Iran’s nuclear installations. That is, for the millionth time, the top US military officer effectively said that he prefers a nuclear armed Iran to an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear installations.

It’s Official, American Grand Jury will not drop the “birther” label

Comments Off

So what is so controversial about the BIRTHER movement that makes everyone get so defensive? Controversy never stopped our society before. The liberals have openly spent years hating Bush, Iraq and the military. The socialists in this country have spent decades pushing racism and bashing capitalism. Nothing is sacred ground in America. Abortion, amnesty, God, terrorism, corporate greed, gun control, gay rights, pornography and drugs are all big-time events today. Yet God forbid, someone mentions the birther issue and the gears completely grind to a halt.

What Didn’t Get Said at the Healthcare Summit

Comments Off

Only 6 percent of the population actually buys their own insurance. (And for this, we are painting the insurance companies as the villains of this melodrama?) Fourteen percent of the population is on Medicare, 14 percent on Medicaid. The other 66 percent do not have insurance but health benefits¸, which is not the same thing. Nine percent gets its benefits from government employment, 4 percent from the military and the remaining 43 percent get their benefits from private employment. The last 15 percent (there is some overlap) has no coverage at all.
President Obama kept talking about how it is these “large pools” in big companies that make insurance cheap, but that is not true. Large pools are only part of the equation. Equally important is that these employees are getting their benefits tax-free.

……….

So Obama’s premise is wrong. We’re not going to be able to “get everybody into the pool” because doing that would mean breaking up the system of employment-based health benefits that is protected by ERISA. That 43 percent of the market is staying put. The only thing that could crack this wall of protection would be if benefits were highly taxed and the federal “insurance exchanges” were made so attractive that people were willing to give up their employment-based benefits in exchange. Those are the things that Obama has sworn won’t happen.

Quietly, A Big Day’s Approaching

McDonald v. Chicago is more, considerably more, than an individual challenge to a city’s gun ban. At its heart, this case has the potential to decide if states are required to obey the Second Amendment. That’s because the primary argument against the Chicago ban is based in the Fourteenth Amendment.

That amendment was added to the Constitution to prevent states from deciding to pick and choose which parts of the Constitution and its amendments.

Tense calm after east J’lem clashes

Several dozen young Muslim men had holed themselves up in the Aksa Mosque on Saturday night and began hurling stones at Christian and Jewish visitors early Sunday morning.

After failing to convince the Arab youths to leave the Aksa Mosque the previous night, the Wakf Islamic trust began negotiating with the men on Sunday morning.

The men, who were apparently protesting the heritage list decision, fled back into the mosque after security forces stormed into the compound, but some of them continued throwing rocks at police deployed in the plaza outside the building.

A quick tour of hyperinflation and the possible consequences for America

Comments Off

“This may surprise you, but we’ve only had long-term inflation since the Federal Reserve was established in 1913 and they got control of our money supply. They have steadily increased the money supply faster than than the increase in the amount of goods and services that that money will buy. The result is that money has become worth less and less until, today, a dollar has about the same purchasing power as four cents had in 1913.”

“Are you kidding?” I asked.

“No,” Mac replied.

“But that means that a penny in 1913 had the same buying power as a quarter, today.”

He nodded.

Cybersecurity bill to give president new emergency powers

When early reports predicted the cybersecurity measure would allow the president to “declare a cybersecurity emergency,” online privacy groups said they felt that would endow the White House with overly ambiguous and far-reaching powers to regulate the Internet.

The miracle of the market

Comments Off

Now think about this: There is absolutely no government planning that goes into what is stocked in grocery stores. No federal Department of Food. No local or state planning commission. No grocery boards. No bureaucrats or bureaucracies. No laws requiring grocery stores to be well stocked. No rules and regulations dictating how much of each food item, including bread, milk, and chicken, needs to appear on the shelves.

So how in the world do grocery stores get stocked without government planning or direction? How is it that so much food appears, almost by magic, within a day or two after most of the shelves have been emptied? Indeed, how do grocery stores manage to have more than enough food for people throughout the year, given that no government department or agency is doing the planning and issuing food directives?
